Keeping up on all current weather information is extremely important in a hurricane situation. Listen continually to the radio for up to the minute instructions. The Local authorities will keep you informed via the radio and television. Evacuation can be necessary to protect you and your family if your home is at risk. You should evacuate under the following conditions

If the local authorities have directed you to leave. Make sure you follow their instructions.

If you live in a mobile home these are particularly hazardous during hurricanes no matter how well fastened to the ground.

If you live in a high rise building. Remember hurricane winds are stronger at higher elevations.

If you live on the coat, in a floodplain, near a river, or on an inland waterway.

If you feel you are in danger from the hurricane.

If you are unable to evacuate, you should go to your wind-safe room.

Home Security - staying safe inside during a hurricane

You need to go to your wind - safe room. If you do not have one then stay indoors during the hurricane and stay away from windows and glass doors. Close all the interior doors and secure and brace all the external doors. Keep your curtains and blinds closed. Do not be fooled if there is a lull in the storm, it could be the eye passion over ahead. The winds will pick up again. Take safety in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level of your home. Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.

If a hurricane is Headed your way, you should listen to the radio or TV for information. Important information will be announced on the radio. This is important in case you need to evacuate or to have up to the hour information on when the winds and rain will be coming your way.

You will need to secure your home, close the storm shutters, and secure any outdoor objects or bring them inside. This will protect against window breakage or objects flying at the house when the hurricane force winds come through your neighborhood.

If you are instructed to turn off your utilities then do it. If not, Turn your refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keekp its doors closed. Turn off all your propane tanks. Don’t use the phone except for serious emergencies.

Collect a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as for cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.
If you know ahead of time about when to expect the storm to hit your house you will have plenty of time to do this.
