Home security when gone on vacation is a little more interesting than just the day to day security stuff. One of the biggest factors to keeping you home safe is to have it appear that it’s not empty. An empty home is a big invitation to any would be thief or groups of kids looking for a place to party.

So in any event, here’s a short list of things to remember:

1. Cancel the newspaper. Nothing says, no body is home like a pile of old newspapers on the driveway

2. Stop the mail. This is more a function of keeping any would be passers-by from nosing through your business. Another option here is to have a neighbor collect it daily for you.

3. See that the landscaping water schedule continues. Also get someone to mow and edge for you. A yard looking like it’s in need of a 3 week trim is another tip off.

4. Get a light time. Put several of you lights inside the house on timers.

Home Security and a Family Friend

Home Security is a game of cat and mouse (or neighborhood dog) with those who wish to harm your family and steal your stuff. It’s cat and mouse because the normal run of the mill thief is looking for a quick and easy hit. This means that if your home is secure, these types of people will most likely move to easier pickins.

Home security is like the neighborhood dog however in that everyone knows him, He might be a friend of your kids or even a relative. These types are much harder to deal with on both an emotional and physical level. The kid may be someone who you’ve welcomed into your home for years. As he’s grown up, he continued to hang out at your place and interact with your family…heck as part of the family.

Then one day, he decides that he needs some money. Your home is easy because the dog already knows you, and knows where things are probably stored. Not only that, he also is recognized as a regular at your home by the neighbors so he has pretty much free reign with taking anything he wants. These types of thefts are the worst.
